We provided an eye-catching home for Wales’s first Maggie’s Caring Centre.
Maggie’s South West Wales in Swansea provides advice and support to people with cancer as well as their friends and family.
Two wings faced with precast concrete wall panels and covered by a curving zinc roof wind into the centre of the building which is formed around a large oval skylight. Facilities include a kitchen, library, dining area, relaxation and counselling spaces, stores and offices.
Our Design Group undertook the reinforcement detailing and scheduling for the building’s structural concrete form.
In a process which required scrupulous attention to detail, each of the building’s individually sized decorative titanium inserts was prefabricated and delivered to site for insertion into corresponding pockets in the precast concrete.
The company was subsequently awarded contracts to construct Maggie’s Centres at The Christie in Manchester and at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.
We also assisted with the delivery of the interim Maggie’s Merseyside centre at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool.
The centre was named Best Community/Healthcare Building at the LABC South Wales Building Excellence Awards 2012. The scheme was also highly commended in the Best Technical Innovation Project category.
